We finally have a Catalogue in English of the Greek and Latin Writers series published by the Fondazione Lorenzo Valla and Arnoldo Mondadori Editore.
This is the only collection in the world that publishes critical texts of classical and medieval authors in the original language, with apparatus, introduction, substantial commentary, and translation. Established in 1970 and long directed by Pietro Citati, the Fondazione Lorenzo Valla has published a collection which ranges from Homer’s Odyssey to Lorenzo Valla’s own Ars Grammatica, and includes authors such as Heraclitus, Empedocles, Sophocles, Pindar, Plato, Virgil, Josephus, Origen, Ptolemy, Basil, Augustine, Bede, John Scotus Eriugena, St. Francis of Assisi and St. Bonaventure, as well as the writings of Hermes Trismegistus; thematic volumes such as Mystery Religions, The Legend of Rome, Christ, The Forgotten Sayings of Jesus, Islamic Sayings of Jesus,Gnostic Texts, Manichaeism, and The Journey of the Soul; books devoted to works of a particular period like Christian Love Treatises of the 12th Century, and specific series such as those centred on the stories and myths of Alexander the Great and the Lives of the Saints.
The collection, now edited by Piero Boitani and Francesco Sisti, has sold over one million copies since 1974, and some of its commentaries have been or are being published by the Oxford and Cambridge University Presses.
